The Cape du Couedic Lighthouse was constructed between 1906-1909 and was the fifteenth to be built on South Australia's coast. It was also the last light to be built in South Australia before the Commonwealth Government took over the management and control of Australian lighthouses in 1915. The actual transfer did not occur until 1917.

It was named after a French naval officer, Charles Louis du Couëdic de Kergoualer [ fr], by the Baudin expedition to Australia during January 1803.

During summer months, Cape de Couedic wave energy flux values are greater than those at Cape Naturaliste, illustrating the strong annual cycle at Cape Naturaliste with respect to Cape de Couedic (S.D. of annual cycle of 2.2e4 and 1.3e4 W m −1, respectively). The integrated wave power throughout the year is greatest at the Cape Sorell site.
